Mazda is seeking to make large gains in fuel economy with its new SKY range of engines and transmission.
The lineup includes a SKY-G direct injection 2.0L I4 gasoline engine with 15% fuel economy improvement, a SKY-D 2.2L I4 diesel engine with 20% fuel economy improvement.
Also new is a SKY-Drive 6-speed automatic transmission they say feels as fast as a dual clutch transmission and gets 5% better fuel economy than the current 6-speed auto box they offer.
These new engines are meant to improve emissions while also providing more power and sportiness to the Mazda lineup. No horsepower numbers were revealed for the engine types.
"Improving fuel efficiency and reducing CO2 emissions is not just a goal at Mazda, it's part of our business plan; we will make vehicles that are safer for our environment," said Jim O'Sullivan, president and CEO, Mazda North American Operations. "We will increase our fuel economy globally by 30 percent by 2015 and offer affordable eco-friendly vehicles to all Mazda customers, not to just a limited segment of the market. The SKY Concept powertrains will play a big part in making this happen."
Mazda aims to reduce vehicle weights by as much as 220 lbs on its next generation of vehicles as well as improve aerodynamics and adding stop/start technology.
The Sky-G and Sky-Drive Transmission are set for a 2011 release while the Sky-D will follow the a year later in 2012.
