After the U.S. set emissions targets of 35.5 for passenger cars, Canada has followed suit and adopted the same emissions rules. It didn't have much choice as it was doubtful manufacturers would have separate rules just for Canada.
The rules will see a 25% reduction in emissions from Canada and a 40% reduction from the U.S., since they consume more large trucks than we do. However this will likely be offset by a huge rise in automobile adoption by developing countries such as China and India.
Car prices are likely to increase to try and get the technology where it should be to match those targets. It'll be interesting to see if they increase the price on cars that already meet these standards or whether the guzzlers will be the ones hit hardest.
Some companies are closer to 35 mpg as a fleet average than others. Honda has less cars to worry about and more are fuel efficient than most, GM on the other hand has over 9 Truck/SUV/CUV/Crossover vehicles that will struggle to ever get over 35 mpg.
Provinces Quebec and BC have announced they plan to set their own regulations rules. This could severely limit the types of cars sold in those markets if manufacturers to limit the types of cars sold. The Federal Government hopes to avoid the situation and is in talks with them.
So you may pay more for a car, but less at the pump.
