Alfa Romeo MiTo gets a healthy new Diesel

Rudolph Diesel, the creator of the Diesel engine, would be happy to see a new power unit going into the Alfa Romeo MiTo.

Fiat, parent company of Alfa Romeo, has developed a 1.3L JTDM II turbo diesel power plant that almost scoffs at using fuel at all.  It will consume fuel at a rate of 55 MPG, which makes the Prius look at its shoes and kick the dirt a little and think, "So what...".In fact it won't even use fuel at stop lights as the stop start system turns the car completely off.  This system alone could save any car 5-8% in fuel. The 4 cylinder kicks up 95 hp and 148 lb-ft of torque at a lowly 1500 rpm and can race Mini Cooper D's to 60 in only 11.6 seconds.

3 Trim levels will be offered with this engine, in European markets where the MiTo is sold.
