In Geneva next month VW will be unveiling the new VW CrossGolf. The CrossGolf is easily recognizable as being in the Golf gene pool.
The CrossGolf sports a number of engine choices. The base model drives off the lot with a Direct Injection 160 hp 1.4L TSI engine with a supercharger/turbo charger combo meal. It nuzzles up to either a 6 spd manual or like the Polo GTI which was revealed earlier in the week, a 7 spd DSG gearbox. Fuel consumption is a fairly miserly 6.8L per 100 kms (35 mpg).
On the diesel side of the equation we have a TDI 1.6L (105 hp) and 2.0L (140 hp). Fuel consumption is down even further to 5.3L of fuel per 100 kms (44 mpg). The grunt comes early at 1750 rpm.
This golf model takes a deep breath and puffs out its fender flares and raises itself up 20mm. It should be capable through snow and still be comfortable on road even with a higher centre of gravity. Wheels are 17" and a bountiful amount of interior motifs are available. Seats folded flat were looking at a cavernous 1450 litres of storage. You'll also impress other drivers with new LED tail lamps. I'm always happy to see an adjustable rake and reach steering wheel, sehr gut Volkswagen. Most importantly if you sever your hand and need to keep it chilled before it can be re-attached, the glove box is chilled !
It wasn't mentioned if 4motion or AWD is available on this model. If so the Suzuki SX-4 has a little competition here. As usual VW does a fantastic job on the fit and finish of their interiors and this CrossGolf appears to be no different.
Although this car will likely not make it to NA I think a variant for Canada wouldn't be that absurd a thought considering our winters here.
